About the role

Selwyn Heights Village, part of the Selwyn Foundation, is a well-established retirement village in Hillsborough, Auckland. Situated on the eastern border of Monte Cecilia Park, the grounds are attractively planted but have plenty of potential for ongoing improvements and creative input. There are many mature trees within the 5 hectares which provide a beautiful backdrop to the existing gardens.

This position is responsible for the planning and overall appearance of the gardens, as well as carrying out the maintenance, care and development of the gardens and lawns throughout the whole village.

About you

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Head Gardener who is able to maintain and develop the gardens, with help from an Assistant Gardener. This is a chance to be part of a village team where you can demonstrate your expertise and knowledge of horticulture and the care of the village grounds.

The work is varied and includes all the functions of gardening and plant care, including lawn maintenance and mowing. Whilst a general gardening background is required, the Head Gardener is expected to have an area of specialty - this may be turf care, nursery work or arboriculture, along with sound knowledge of gardening machinery, sprays and chemicals.

Strong people management skills is also essential for this position, together a friendly and open nature as you interact with the residents on a daily basis. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to plan, organise, complete projects on time and achieve seasonal goals.

You must also be reliable, strong, energetic, fit and able to work productively each day. This is a full time, permanent position and you'll be joining a maintenance and resident services team, known for its service ethic and results.

A full New Zealand driver's license is also required
